The Dell Streak Will Have Android 2.0, Very Large Screen
Monday, 26 October 2009 08:04

New details have emerged on Dell's upcoming Mobile Internet Device, the Streak. This will be a small portable computer with a variety of wireless access options and a focus on accessing the Web and e-mail.

Dell StreakThe centerpiece of this model will be its 5-inch, WVGA (800 x 480) display. This will be a capacitive Touchscreen with multi-touch support.

The Streak will use a tablet shape, and won't include a hardware keyboard. It has been designed to be used primarily in landscape mode, but with portrait support.

It will sport Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the ability to connect to 3G networks. In addition, it will function as a GSM phone.

Android 2.0 will be its operating system, and it will come with the standard suite of applications, many of which tie in to Google's online services, like Gmail.

In addition, the Streak will have a 5-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and a 1,300 mAh battery.

Pricing & Availability
At this point, it's probably too early to say when the Dell Streak will be released, or what it will cost. Still, an unconfirmed report that came out this summer  said this model could debut this fall, possibly through a wireless carrier.

There have been rumors that this company is prepping devices for AT&T, but Dell could also be planning on selling this model directly to the public unlocked.

Dell's Android tablet leaked, detailed
Monday, 26 October 2009 08:00

Dell's rumored media tablet has been confirmed today by a leak from Vietnamese source Tinhte. To be called the Streak, the device will be almost exclusively controlled by a 5-inch, 800x480 capacitive touchscreen and should not only use Android 2.0 but support multi-touch gestures, including pinch to zoom. It should have 3G onboard and will even support calls, though the size means this will be a secondary role.

The Streak should also have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for shorter-range wireless and will also have a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash as well as a microSDHC slot for storage. A large-capacity 1,500mAh battery should give it practical battery life, though this hasn't been tested.

Dell's choice of processor isn't mentioned, but the original rumor gave the tablet an Atom processor rather than the ARM chips more commonly used with Android devices.

If the Streak reaches production, the same rumor would have it ship in early 2010 and may incorporate an experimental business model that gives the device away for free in return for a subscription to a media provider. [via Engadget]

Dell Streak Android handset surfaces

Details of the Google Android-based Dell Streak have appeared online

Published on Oct 23, 2009

Details of Dell's Streak touchscreen Mobile Internet Device (MID) have popped up online, revealing that it will run the Android 2.0 operating system.

We still haven't seen the Dell's first Android based phone on our shores but that hasn't stopped the second cropping-up over at SlashGear.com.

Form-wise the Streak has taken the expansive touchscreen route, boasting a 5-inch WVGA, that sits above three hardware buttons on the bottom of the handset.

Aside of the generous display, rumoured specs for the Streak include the usual suspects; 5-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G connectivity and microSD card support are all said to feature.

Whilst it's officially the second Android-toting phone from Dell, we're yet to see the Mini 3i launch outside of China, it has been confirmed however that the handset will be making its way to the US at the start of 2010, but not necessarily with the Android OS.

Quite what that means release-wise for the Streak is hard to say, but we weren't too impressed by the Mini 3i's lack of connectivity options, so the sooner we get some serious Dell Android hardware to play with, the better.

Dell Streak 5-inch 3G Android MID leaks

After Dell CEO Michael Dell confirmed that the company’s Android smartphone would, in fact, make it to the US – albeit with some changes from the original Chinese model – details of a second Android-based device have leaked.  According to Tinhte.com and another image supplied to SlashGear, you’re looking at the Dell Streak, a 5-inch WVGA 800 x 480 touchscreen Android 2.0 Donut MID, with WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G WWAN connectivity.  Front photos of the Dell Streak – together with size comparison shots – in the gallery, together with a hands-on video after the cut.

The Dell Streak – as the prototype is labelled – also has a 5-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, a microSD card slot and a 1,300mAh battery.  Hands-on feedback is scant, aside from that the WiFi was very sensitive.  From the video, below, we can see that hardware controls are minimal, with three touch-sensitive buttons along the right-hand side of the display and volume controls – together with a camera shortcut and an unknown key – on the top edge.  A multifunction dock connector is on the bottom edge, and there appears to be a front-facing camera – presumably for video calls – on the left-hand side of the display.  On the “engineering sample” label, meanwhile, the model variant is listed as “US”, suggesting that at least prototypes using US-spec 3G are being tested.

The existence of the device fits in with rumors from back in June, when the Wall Street Journal reported that Dell had been developing Android MID prototypes.  Described as “larger than Apple’s iPod touch”, the speculation was fuelled by later comments from Dell’s consumer devision president, Ronald Garriques, who suggested that the company was considering screen sizes ranging from 4- to 12-inches.
